Play your ‘joker card’: a smart salary negotiation strategy

Many companies follow a structured performance review and salary increase schedule, often only once a year. But if you want to secure a raise sooner, you can play your ‘joker card’. This strategy can be highly effective—but should be used wisely. A good rule of thumb is to reassess your salary every four to five years (outside of standard review periods). This ensures you continue to develop professionally and stay financially competitive. In some cases, it can even be the key to bringing your salary to the right level.

An effective strategy is to subtly mention other offers you have received. This opens the door to a discussion about your contributions and what you receive in return.

Timing is crucial in this process. Choose a moment when you have proven your value, such as after successfully completing a project, receiving a positive review, or just before a peak season when your employer truly can’t afford to lose you. This strengthens your negotiating position. Prepare thoroughly by researching market salaries for similar roles and backing up your request with your achievements.

The conversation itself is best approached in a calm and professional manner. For example, you could start with: *“I’ve noticed that my salary is falling behind compared to what I see or hear in the market. Recently, I was approached by another company with an interesting offer, but I really enjoy working here. That’s why I’d like to discuss with you first what possibilities there are here.”*

By subtly mentioning an external offer, you make it clear that you know your worth without coming across as threatening. It shows loyalty while also demonstrating that you are serious about your compensation. Give your manager space to consider the situation and be prepared for different responses. You may receive a counteroffer right away, or your manager might need time to discuss it internally.

It's important to stay realistic. This approach works well, but don’t use it too often. Reviewing your salary and reaffirming your value every four to five years is a smart frequency. This way, you continue to grow professionally while ensuring you don’t fall behind financially.

A good conversation about your salary can not only lead to a higher income but also to more appreciation and confidence in your role within the company. Dare to start the conversation and take steps towards a compensation that reflects your performance.
